THE CHRONICLE

January 2, 2000
Volume 45, No. 1

Y2000
If you will look up you will see the date, January 2, 2000. Isn't that amazing? We are now, or in a few days will be (depending on when in the "Chronicle cycle" you are reading this), in the 2000s!

Many, many years ago, when I read Orwell's 1984, I thought that year would never come; it seemed so way out in the future. In the 1960s, when I went to see Kubrick's "2001," I knew for sure that that year was so far off I might as well just forget about it.

And here we are, on the edge of the 2000s, or in them — and it is just like any other day. So normal, so routine. Hmmm. I guess things just seem very different when they are far away. Up close we see that God's world is reassuringly familiar. Wherever we go, whether it is to the hospital or to the year 2000, God is there, and all time and space are part of God's world. Nothing that God has made is alien. We are at home wherever God is, which is literally everywhere and every time and every date...and every century.

Fear not Y2K — the turn of a calendar page cannot throw God off balance. God's world will be just fine. Happy New Year!
