Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
—James 1:17

We often act as if our good deeds and great accomplishments are our work alone. In reality, it is God at work in us who makes all things possible. Regardless of the scope or complexity, God is behind all that we are and do. We may not see God’s hand in our accomplishments, but God is the reason we have a mind, body, and spirit. It is God who makes it possible for us to work and live.

Yet, our ego oftentimes takes over and starts saying, “I did this, I did that, or I made this happen.” I, I, I….. When we take the “I” out the equation we find ourselves suddenly magnifying God and experiencing the fullness of God's gift of grace.

When we accept a gift or give a gift, we are participating in a wonderful and noble deed. Giving is not just giving; it’s an act of compassion that reflects the heart’s goodness. Giving with a cheerful spirit, without looking for anything in return, is a pure gift from the heart.

We can easily see the deed of giving as being outwardly gratifying because we feel such joy when we freely give to another. But, it’s equally gratifying to receive inwardly. Learning how to accept gifts or acts of kindness from others is the other side of the coin. If we are reluctant to allow a person to share the wholesomeness of God with us, we close a door to spiritual prosperity that God may be intending to open.

Gracious God, help me to be a cheerful giver who gives in faith, knowing that the gift will reach the hearts of those who are in need.
