God saw all that He had made, and it was very good.
—Genesis 1:31

Faith in God is optional. There are no “scientific” proofs that God exists. But I can’t imagine any other force in the universe creating what we find all around us. How could anyone set up the birth and life process? Or the animal, bird and insect worlds? How about the way many wounds heal by just keeping them free of germs? Miracles right before our very eyes.

I had these thoughts upon waking this morning and experiencing the freshness and coolness of October. Seasons—another gift from God. The warmth of summer, the invigoration of winter and the refreshing coolness of spring and fall—what a system!

While we cannot “prove” God, nobody has ever been able to provide a satisfactory alternative explanation for our universe. God is all around us, in the air we breathe, in food from the soil, in our very bodily systems.

In much the same way that God sends us the gift of October, He also sends us hope, inspiration and our inner need to have something to believe in. Only through his presence can we look at the sad things that happen in our world and continue to find meaning and purpose for our lives.

On this day in the month of October, God reaches out to you and to me. We have but to tell him that we know He is there, or just that we hope He is there, and his presence can transform our inner and outer worlds. God yearns for us to open our hearts to him.

Today is the day that the Lord has made. He waits to feed us, to nurture us. He loves me. He loves you. Praise the Lord!

Thank you, God, for all the gifts you send; help me to know they are from you and come because of your love for each of us. Amen.
