                  of Your Time
                  Living an Unhurried Life
              Time
seems to be the hardest taskmaster of all in our lives, because
it feels so rigid, so unbending. We try to squeeze a multitude
of daily responsibilities into the unyielding confines marked
by the ticking clock and find ourselves exhausted at the end
of the day. More than exhaustion, however, we may feel as if
our efforts are never quite enough. We drop into bed at night
wondering why we didn’t fit more into the time we had.
We may feel anxious about what is left undone, that the day
has ‘passed us by,’ that what we accomplished wasn’t
as grand as we had hoped. We may even feel ‘cheated’ because
we don’t feel we were given enough time.

It might be helpful to think of time, not as inflexible, but
as flowing. Surprisingly, the word time comes from the same
word as tide. Close your eyes for a moment
and imagine being at the seaside on a warm breezy day. Look out over the ocean
and watch the tide coming in, going out, coming in, going out. There is no
hurry, no demand, no harsh cessation of movement – just coming in, going
out, coming in, going out. If we were to waken to a new morning and treat time
as if it were a gentle rocking motion of beauty, we might find the stress in
our lives reduced, and our inner confusion clearing.
