And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?"
—Mark 4:41

Jesus' apostles were out in a fishing boat—as they often were—with Jesus asleep in the stern of the vessel, when a great storm arose.

Becoming very afraid, they awakened Jesus and asked him if he even cared about them, since he was asleep while they were in such danger. He then calmed the sea with his words and asked his disciples, "Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?"

This is a message to us, a message of great comfort and security in the storms of life. We can either live afraid or live victoriously. Jesus tells us, here and now, that we can rest in his assurance that he will surround us with the arms of his safety. It sometimes does not seem that way to us, but our vision is limited. Jesus promises to take care of us.

Even if we are overcome by death, He will carry us safely to the haven that he has assured us is waiting for us. And if it is a loved one who has died, he guarantees that they are well and living eternally in the Kingdom of God.

We will experience pain throughout life, in many situations, but we will never be alone. Jesus calms the seas and surrounds us with divine safety.

Lord, give me the courage to believe and to rest in you. Amen.
