From the fruit of the mouth one’s stomach is satisfied, the yield of the lips brings satisfaction.
—Proverbs 18:20

Sometimes we talk without thinking. Sometime we speak with words of anger. Sometimes we speak words that we later regret. Then there are times when the fruit, the yield of our lips is extraordinary. When what comes from our mouth not only satisfies us but brings goodness and beauty where only ugliness once had been.

We know what it's like when words slip generously from our lips. We feel a surge of joy as a channel of enthusiasm and energy fills in our soul. From that flow of enthusiasm and energy more goodness develops, more grace begins to spread.

When we are filled with the goodness and grace that has come from the words of our mouth, we feel the pulsing of God's Spirit in us. We have the sense that maybe heaven has been at work, helping us speak the word that is creative, the word that builds up, the word that strengthens, the word that shares wisdom.

We feel the same satiety we feel after partaking in a dinner of our most favorite food. Most importantly, the words that have filled us have been loosed upon a hungry world, and nothing is the same again.

Gracious God, help me notice the words I speak and the spirit that is behind those words.
